Karl Lagerfeld has died at 85, according to reports in France.

Closer magazine is reporting the designer, who is close friends with supermodels across the globe and was once the creative director of French fashion house Chanel, died in the early hours of this morning.

The magazine states the designer was taken to The American hospital of Paris on Monday and was admitted overnight. Express.co.uk has contacted a representative for Lagerfeld asking for comment.

According to the French publication, Lagerfeld died after several weeks of ill health.

Last month, the fashion icon missed two of Chanel’s haute couture shows in Paris.

The brand said in a statement: “Mr Lagerfeld, artistic director of Chanel, who was feeling tired, asked Virginie Viard, director of the creative studio of the house, to represent him.”

Lagerfeld’s absence at the shows marked the first time he had ever missed taking a bow at the end of a Chanel show, according to The Mirror.

The legendary designer was born in Hamburg, Germany in 10933 and went on to become on of the biggest names in fashion.

During the course of his career, he made his mark on Fendi, of which he has been the creative director since 1965, and Chanel, where he took over as creative director in 1983.
